About us

Being Mandela / About us

The approach

In 2015, looking ahead to 2018, Leo Phiri a local film and television Producer approached the Nelson Mandela foundation with a concept that sought to celebrate Madiba’s centenary year in 2018 but more importantly sustain and preserve Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

The approach was two- fold, firstly produce content using film, television, music, performing art and live events with artistic expressions that will forever remain embedded on various media platforms. Secondly contribute to the endowment fund of the Nelson Mandela Foundation with the commercial exploitation of the produced content with the Foundation being a beneficiary of 40% of the Producer’s net profit. The revenue generated will go back into the development work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation thereby practically sustaining and preserving the legacy.

Concept and background

In December 2016, a partnership was forged with Blanket Entertainment (Pty) Ltd giving birth to “Being Mandela”. The Nelson Mandela story is a well-documented story hence the concept prides itself in telling the untold Nelson Mandela story focussing on Madiba’s ideals and values to tell a new narrative that is fresh, appealing and that will stay relevant for generations to come.
