SYNOPSIS

Nandi and Zakhele are a young Durban based couple trying to build a life for themselves and their baby. Down on their luck, Nandi has a degree but is struggling to find work; and Zakhele is in a downward spiral – Substance abuse is gaining control over his life. To make matters worse, their young baby has health problems and needs medication every month.

On an auspicious day for South Africa, Mandela Day, the couple hit rock bottom.

Zakhele, who works piece jobs occasionally, hasn’t paid the rent because he has been buying drugs. When the landlord comes knocking Zakhele runs off and the landlord evicts Nandi and the baby on the spot.

The film’s narrative focusses on the tense situation inside the shop where the diverse group of hostages question the couple’s morality and at the same time perform an introspection of themselves in an effort to convince Zakhele and Nandi to let them go. Their interactions become an exploration of our diverse cultures and the problems of contemporary South Africa.
